What Is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is the application of computer science to analyze data. It is typically used to understand and process clinical data. When doing so, questions and concerns regarding the data are often raised.

What Happens In Bioinformatics?

Data from experiments is stored, processed, and interpreted in bioinformatics. Scientists do this by first building databases to hold and share the data. They then try to develop new software tools and algorithms to analyze the data. For example, they might create a tool to record influenza outbreaks around the country or use an algorithm to study the function and structure of a molecule in our body, like a protein.

What Is Computational Biology?

Computational biology is another branch of biology that is often confused with bioinformatics. Computational biology is trying to find a solution to an issue that is often noticed because of studies in bioinformatics.


What Happens In Computational Biology?

In computational biology, algorithms and software tools are developed to address concerns or answer questions. An example would be a scientist using technology to select the best vaccination strain for influenza. Another example would be creating a model of the brain to answer questions regarding the structure of the brain.


What Should You Learn Computational Biology Or Bioinformatics?

Although both fields are not very popular, having knowledge in both branches is said to be very helpful when conducting experiments and research. Many employers are also looking for people with these skills since it is rare for applicants to be familiar with computational biology or bioinformatics. Specifically, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and software companies are looking for people who are acquainted with these two fields. This is because both branches of biology are essential in creating specific medicines, treatments and healthcare practices. They are also incredibly useful when developing measures to prevent diseases specifically cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Lastly, so many research studies require knowledge of these two fields. Bioinformatics is very popular for studying and receiving data from the body and computational biology is being used to research solutions for diseases and infections discovered through bioinformatics. With this technology, it is also possible to study the human genome, providing scientists with an even better understanding of our body.


How Can You Learn Computational Biology Or Bioinformatics?

There are undergraduate programs available in bioinformatics and computational biology at numerous colleges. When doing so, it is recommended to complete an internship program to gain work experience and apply the knowledge you gained from classes. After undergraduate studies, if you enjoy the subject, you should pursue graduate studies. You can enroll in a Master’s program for the subjects but to participate in advanced research studies, you must have a Ph.D. It is recommended to join doctoral programs as they give you great opportunities with organizations like the National Cancer Institute. Overall, gaining knowledge and experience in computational biology and/or bioinformatics is a great idea if you are interested in computer science and biology. You will definitely not regret it!
